JESSE SPYCHALLA
Jesse Spychalla from Wausau is an expert on cholesterol levels in food. He has to be, because at age 11, Jesse had a heart attack.
Jesse is just like any other teenager. He’s an avid sports fan and is already a veteran at fly fishing and even ties his own flies. He’s an accomplished artist and eventually wants to major in art in college. But, unlike most boys, Jesse has to be careful of what he eats.
Jesse suffers from severe coronary artery disease and an abnormally high cholesterol level I his blood. Jesse’s cholesterol level has been tested as high as 694 (with normal being less than 170). At age 11, he underwent a triple coronary artery bypass grafting at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. This surgery is extremely rare in a child. Since then, he has needed to take multiple medications for his heart, and to carefully watch what he eats.

It’s a routine that some might find discouraging. But not Jesse. He takes it all in stride, living as normal of a life as possible, and enjoying every minute of it.
