BECKY SCHREINER : 1989 CHAMPION
Becky Schreiner, daughter of Peter and Val Schreiner of Stratford, will always be a very special part of our local Children’s Miracle Network effort. In 1989, the first year that Saint Joseph’s Hospital participated in the national event, Becky was chosen to represent all of the children in north central Wisconsin by being our first miracle “spokeschild.”
Becky was chosen because of her incredible story ~ a story of struggle and triumph ~ a story of courage and fear. Becky was born on September 25, 1981. She was born with a rare birth defect, gastroschisis. Physicians did not expect her to live more than a few months. Later, they thought she might reach age five, and they said that she would never reach the age of 10. She proved them wrong.

Because of surgeries she required as an infant, Becky had short bowel syndrome, requiring intravenous nutrition at night. As her condition grew worse, it was determined that she needed a liver-intestinal combination transplant. In February of 1992 a donor was found and the transplant was completed.
Unfortunately, seven months later, only days before her 11th birthday, Becky passed away.
Becky’s story touched so many lives in her short time with us. Over 15 years after being named our first spokeschild, Becky’s story is still being told. Those who knew her, remember her quick wit and charm. Those that hear her story can only imagine what an angel she was here on earth and is now, in Heaven.
